Almost two-thirds of the battery electric cars sold in the U.S. The roomy Model S luxury sedan now starts at about $90,000 with a 100 kWh battery pack and all-wheel drive, offering 405 miles of range. Volkswagen Group (which includes VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley in the U.S.) had Tesla badges on them.

The machine, which GM says it aims to develop by 2012, would run on batteries and use wireless technology to avoid traffic backups and navigate cities. GM is betting PUMAs more car-like traits -- an enclosed compartment and top speed of 35 miles per hour -- will lead to better results. PUMA would have a range of about 35 miles.

Similarly, 22 percent expressed interest in a battery electric vehicle (BEV), but only 5 percent bought one. How much range is enough? Arguments over how much range is needed are contentious.
