Chrysler Group is working with NextEnergy to evaluate vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology using four all-electric minivans. Detroit-based NextEnergy is a non-profit energy-technology and business accelerator. Each is powered by a 24 kWh battery modified to accommodate bidirectional charging.

Department of Energy to develop a test fleet of 220 hybrid pickup trucks and minivans, vehicles now scrapped in the sweeping turnaround plan for Chrysler announced this week by Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne. “Until the (battery) storage gets resolved, I think electric vehicles are going to struggle,&# he said.

That would be the Dodge Circuit, a car that Chrysler unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January and which is now prominently displayed at the New York Auto Show. The plan is to produce the battery packs as modules that can be easily combined and arranged for different uses in a variety of vehicles.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Batteries not ready. Hyundai Partnering with Korean battery companies for hybrids. 2010 Prius designed to be manufactured with NiMH or Lithium batteries.
