Electricity is a commodity that is bought and sold, and yet unlike most other commodities, it cannot easily be stored. If too much or too little electricity is present in the power grid, the network can suddenly become unbalanced. In such an emergency, a bidirectional EV with charge to spare could come to the rescue.

DaimlerChrysler has presented plug-in hybrids in commercial vans that have enough room to store the batteries, but the technology is not quite ripe for cars."Plug-in Plug-in hybrids make little sense in a car with current battery technology," he said. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
