Rolls-Royce will be the leading provider of all-electric and hybrid-electric power and propulsion systems for Advanced Air Mobility and will scale this technology over time to larger platforms.

Rolls-Royce announced its new small gas turbine that has been specifically developed to power hybrid-electric flight is set to begin testing. This will open up new, longer routes than electric battery powered aircraft can support as of today. The turbogenerator can be used in serial or parallel hybrid applications.

The diesel-fueled Capstone microturbine produces ultra-low emissions and requires less maintenance than the traditional combustion engine found in today’s hybrid-electric vehicles. Capstone was also recently awarded a Department of Energy grant to develop a flex fuel turbine that will operate on agricultural syngas and hydrogen.

Plug Power Inc. The Class-5 EGEN delivery van is built by Workhorse Group and charged by a Plug Power ProGen hydrogen fuel cell system (2 x 10 kW). The ProGen-powered electric delivery van is one of the first of its kind to operate in a standard commercial environment and is deployed on a standard delivery route for FedEx.

entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Balqon Corporation to build its zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell /electric hybrid terminal tractor, the Zero-TT. This agreement combines the Cargotec USA Kalmar chassis with Balqon’s electric drivetrain ( earlier post ) and Vision’s hydrogen fuel cell range-extender.
