With alternative fuel vehicles now approaching 1% of new vehicle production, however, they are in fact beginning to have a “ measurable and meaningful impact ” on overall new vehicle fuel economy and CO 2 emissions. In the analysis, EPA uses overall fuel economy in mpg equivalent (mpge) and tailpipe CO 2 emission values.

BYD’s plug-in hybrid F3DM went on sale (for fleet operators) late last year, and it’s supposed to launch its first all-electric model — the E6 — in the second half of 2009. In February, China’s Chery Automobile unveiled an electric concept car at the Detroit Auto Show. Think it’s a bad trade?

Last week the company announced that it would bring its five-seat E6 electric car in small numbers to the US next year. Beyond manufacturing, subsidies of 50,000 yuan were offered to taxi fleets and local government agencies in 13 cities for each hybrid or electric vehicle they purchased, while research subsidies were also increased.
