The new laboratory test, the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure ( WLTP ), will introduce more realistic testing conditions for measuring pollutant and CO 2 emissions than the previous, outdated lab test (NEDC). However, GTRs require incorporation into national or regional legal frameworks before they can be applied.

In Europe, legal regulations on the crash properties of hybrid and electric vehicles are currently under discussion, while in the USA and Japan relevant standards and requirements are already in place.
