The objective of this AOI is to develop and demonstrate innovative approaches to reduce the impact on the grid from multiple vehicles charging at extreme fast charging (XFC) rates. Plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) present a new cybersecurity vulnerability to the US transportation sector and the electricity grid.

Small long-term evaluation program, including modeling of vehicle-to-grid building benefits and economics, begun with Southern California Edison, joined by EPRI, other utilities, US DOE. Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs. Blue Concept PHEV Van with diesel or hydrogen fuel cells and rooftop photovoltaic. Batteries not ready.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. If no one wants your car (because people think it sucks), then no one will buy it, regardless of how good the fuel economy may or may not be.
