The US EPA has long had what is referred to as a “ footprint rule, ” which allows larger vehicles to pollute more. And giant SUVs have, in turn, eliminated the auto emissions gains we could have had if cars had remained normal sized. A bill containing the new auto emissions rules will be introduced in parliament this week.

The entire auto industry has given up on investing in Hydrogen cars. Another thing that is infuriating people is that Toyota’s executives are busy lobbying politicians in Japan, USA to slow any pro EV legislation. In the USA, environmentalists are now calling for a boycott of the brand. million cars sold in the USA.

In the past the auto industry has responded to incentives and guidelines set by government agencies and reengineered their product to meet this requirement. In fact, use of these fuels is required by law in many states of the USA. Similar processes can be followed again. Already the Chevrolet Volt is moving us in that direction.

The objections they raised for years -- "no one is interested, no one would plug in, the technology is too complex, the benefits are minimal, its just shifting the pollution from the tailpipe to the smokestack, theres no demand for these cars" -- still show up occasionally, but are by and large history.
