Well, America’s auto industry delivered over 100,000. And no one asked what it would cost. That helped us become the world’s greatest industrial power. It helps that the auto industry will be building more efficient new vehicles. It’s a 21st-century equivalent of what we did in 1942. We just had to do it.

The pure electric vehicles, for reserve, must carry heavy and expensive batteries—which add expense as well as weight—and must have access to high-powered recharging stations [ 1 ]. On the other hand, the PHEV can use the existing electric distribution and gasoline dispensing systems with minor or no change.
