International study finds air pollution leads to millions of hospital visits for asthma attacks worldwide

The researchers aimed to estimate the number of asthma emergency room visits and new onset asthma cases globally attributable to PM 2.5 , ozone, and NO 2 concentrations. This is the first global study of the potential impacts of air pollution on serious asthma attacks that cause people to visit emergency rooms in hospitals around the world.

We use the GEOS-Chem global chemical transport model to evaluate the quantitative utility of FNR observed from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument over three northern midlatitude source regions. They can also arise from paint fumes, cleaning products, and pesticides, and are a by-product of burning fossil fuels in factories and automobiles.
