The EPA rates fuel economy at 22 mpg city/29 highway/25 combined while running on 91 octane. mpg, with our overall economy coming in just above the EPA rating at 26.1 The 12-way heated and ventilated power sport seats, carbon fiber, piano black, satin-finished accents and the analog center-dash clock added posh touches.

Competing in the premium midsize SUV category, the 2021 Cadillac XT5 is right in the middle of stiff competition, including models from Acura, Audi, BMW, Genesis, Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Tesla and Volvo. We were surprised to cross the 30 mpg mark for this 3,915-pound, five-passenger midsize SUV.

In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 mpg, exceeding the EPA figure. Running on unleaded premium, the EPA has rated the fuel economy at 19 mpg city/25 highway/21 combined. We are familiar with this engine as it was in the 2021 Genesis GV80 we reviewed earlier. The EPA estimates the G80’s fuel economy to be 17 mpg city/26 highway/20 combined. If fuel economy is a pacing item, then getting 32 mpg with the smaller displacement probably is worth foregoing the performance benefits of the larger engine. The dash had real carbon fiber trim along with a minimal use of brushed aluminum.
