Mazda has been repositioning itself into the premium category, and the CX-90 will give it a larger SUV to compete with the Acura MDX , Buick Enclave , Kia Telluride , Hyundai Palisade , Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlande r. It also will mark the first plug-in hybrid from Mazda when it arrives in two months.

Third party converters have spent time and resources tweaking their plug-in hybrids to meet ARB testing written with gasoline-only hybrids in mind.

The styling is modern, the interior materials and fit-and-finish are as good as anything in this category, and the fuel economy, while not high, is acceptable. Oh, but if fuel economy is your thing, Mitsubishi has teased a plug-in hybrid version of the 2022 Outlander is on the not-so-far-off horizon (replacing the current 2021 PHEV model).
