Diesel vehicles posted their lowest market share since 2001, as demand fell by double digits in 20 of the 27 markets included in JATO’s analysis, with the biggest drops in the UK (-30%), Scandinavia (-22%) and Benelux (-22%). Despite growing at a slower rate than in previous years, the shift from traditional cars to SUVs continued in 2018.

The market share of diesel vehicles fell to 39.5% SUVs were a key driver of growth in February, with the volume of vehicles registered up by 24.7% compared to the same month last year, meaning SUVs accounted for 33% of the total market in February. Demand for SUVs continued to rise, with the segment’s volume up by 24.7%

In Europe, a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that the average car sold in the EU in 2012 was 9% more fuel-efficient than the average three years before, due to improved technology and an increase in the share of diesel cars. Diesel vehicles represent 55% of the newly registered vehicle fleet.
