Today, the term “alternative” is used for all fuels that are not a part of the fossil fuel group—diesel, gasoline, heavy oil and kerosene. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are considered alternative fuels. Our aim is to achieve zero-emission logistics by 2050.

The California Air Resources Board launched a $20 million funding assistance program designed to spur the purchase of hybrid trucks and buses that reduce smog-forming pollution and address climate change. Transportation accounts for 40% of the total emissions of climate changing gases.

The 2009 Hydrogen Road Tour, an annual road rally to demonstrate the advancements in fuel-cell technology, will begin May 26 in San Diego, California and end June 3 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Fuel cell technology is on the verge of becoming a practical alternative to burning gasoline.

Existing law exempts certain clean, alternative-fuel vehicles from these occupancy requirements, so that a vehicle with a sole occupant may use an HOV lane—if the vehicle displays a Clean Air Vehicle sticker. The state has implemented three clean air vehicle HOV sticker programs in recent years: White HOV stickers.
