ITF launches global initiative to decarbonize transport

Transport activity currently contributes 23% of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, with the share expected to rise. The work will be completed by 2018/19, in time for the first round of reviews of the COP21 decarbonization targets in 2020. The preliminary results of the project will be presented at the next ITF Summit in May 2017.

It will be launched today by Geoff Hoon, the transport secretary, and Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, with the aim of kickstarting the market for cleaner road vehicles and slashing the UKs CO2 emisisons. The scheme, which would be enforced by setting a ceiling for the amount of CO2 a car emits, will become operational in 2011.
