The report shows that projected global ZEV adoption from 2015 to 2039 (based on the BNEF 2017 forecast) may follow an s-curve, similar to that of smartphone adoption in the US from 2005 to 2015. As of October 2017, 337,483 ZEVs have been sold in California. Tesla’s Superchargers can recharge EVs to 80% in 20 to 40 minutes.

The researchers found that focusing on the behavioral aspects of consumers in vehicle purchase decisions is key to encouraging the rapid uptake of plug-in hybrid vehicles, battery-electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. They modeled two different future scenarios for alternative-fuel vehicle policy worldwide to 2050.
