The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is arriving in select dealerships in 10 states this week with an EPA-estimated 27-mile (43.5-kilometer) The 2016 Sonata Plug-in is EPA-rated at 99 MPGe combined, with 34 kWh/100 miles, and 40 mpg combined for charge sustaining (conventional hybrid) operation.

Hyundai began the US rollout of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) ( earlier post ) and its conventional hybrid sibling (HEV) with a series of media drives in California—one of the main markets for the PHEV, which offers some 24 miles (38.6 The 2016 Sonata PHEV features a 9.8 Earlier post.).

California conducted a similar review in 2016 for vehicle standards through the 2025 model year and found the standards achievable, cost-effective and appropriate. Businesses that buy zero-emission vehicles are also now eligible for a tax benefit estimated to be worth around $13,000 in the year they purchase the vehicles.

But it’s hard to have any sympathy for the industry after so many manufacturers have been chanting the mantra of electrification since 2016. If you count plug-in hybrids, new-model EV sales are hovering somewhere around 7 percent right now. As unhappy as it makes me to admit this, I’m siding with the automotive lobby on this one.
