Natural graphite often provides a low-cost option, despite the extensive processing needed to transform mined product into the high carbon, low impurity, technical grades required for lithium-ion batteries. Chinese exports of scrap steel increased from around 1,000 t in 2016 to 2.2 Mt in 2017.
