OPEC’s coordinated effort to curtail global supply has so far managed to put a floor under oil prices, which have been sitting modestly above US$50 since the deal was announced at the end of November last year. Analysts and experts are now mostly predicting that oil prices will remain below US$60 this year.

These benefits have been realized through lab testing and Nsolv’s pilot project at Fort McKay, Alberta, which produced its 80,000 th barrel in January 2016. Nsolv is in the process of finalizing a partnership with a major heavy oil producer to construct a commercial-scale facility. The oil is sent to refineries for further processing.

The Saudi decision to let the market set prices and to pursue market share, has led to steep declines in crude and petroleum product prices. The decision also has impacted natural gas export prices negatively, since, for Russia's long-term supply agreements, they wholly or partially are indexed to oil prices.
