As of July 2015, there were three one-way operators in North America, serving 511,000 members with a collective fleet of 6,870 vehicles, according to a study to be published.

Where it used to be Hertz or Avis–or a taxi–the choices now are much more complex. Uber’s value proposition is that it is cheaper than using a taxi and much cheaper than using a personal car. RelayRides changed its name to Turo in 2015 and has been described as an “Airbnb for real peoples’ cars.”

The DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges for autonomous vehicles, in 2005 and 2007, formed the foundation for today’s autonomous taxis. One of the robots that made an appearance at the DRC Finals in 2015 was called ATRIAS , developed by Jonathan Hurst at the Oregon State University Dynamic Robotics Laboratory. Or at least, that’s the goal.
