The number of EU countries with CO2-related car taxation rose to 15 in 2008. Romania was the first and so far only Eastern European Member State to introduce CO 2 -related taxation last year as part of a more comprehensive overhaul of vehicle taxation in the country.

Portuguese drivers are the greenest in Europe when it comes to buying cars with an average CO2 rate of 138g/km (eg. The seventeen EU countries that levy passenger car taxes partially or totally based on the car’s carbon dioxide emissions and/or fuel consumption are: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
