In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Volvo Ford-owned company exploring PHEVs "ReCharge" flex-fuel series 60-mile concept PHEV w/wheel motors. Batteries not ready. Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. The big deal was that the oil industry saw real competition and persuaded GM to abandon the project and crush them all like cans. GM would only lease them.
