UNEP produced its first Global Mercury Assessment in 2002 and a subsequent study in 2007. Owing to their larger volumes, intermediate and deep ocean waters below 100 metres actually store much larger tonnages of anthropogenic mercury than surface waters. Global anthropogenic mercury emissions from industrial sources may be rising.
