Apart from contaminated sites, the mercury pollution detected today is often found in locations very far away from its original source. UNEP produced its first Global Mercury Assessment in 2002 and a subsequent study in 2007. This heavy metal is persistent and is dispersed throughout the world by atmospheric transport.
