UNEP produced its first Global Mercury Assessment in 2002 and a subsequent study in 2007. For example, warmer temperatures may increase rates of organic productivity in freshwater and marine ecosystems, and rates of bacterial activity, possibly leading to faster conversion of inorganic mercury to methylmercury.
