In the wake of the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster (583 killed in a post-crash fireball), researchers looked into the possibility of using ultralong, associative polymers as a fuel additive to increase the drop diameter in the post-impact mist, thereby limiting the event to a relatively cool, short-lived fire.
