Chinese state-owned automaker Chery is reportedly still looking to the United States as a possible point of expansion. Chery had plans to break into our market back in 2005 and supposedly had things lined up to import a limited supply of its Exeed crossover in 2020 before the world went haywire. Today is not like before.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery Automobile Company Ltd have reached agreement on a proposed joint venture in China. JLR and Chery will now follow the official process to establish a joint venture company in China. In 2011, Chery recorded sales of 643,000 units, ranked Nº 6 among the passenger vehicle manufacturers in China.

According to consultancy McKinsey, China’s car market will grow ten-fold from 2005 to 2030 which will increase demand for petrol and diesel from 110million tonnes to 500million tonnes, prompting a sharp rise in carbon emissions in a country that has already overtaken the US as the world’s biggest source of greenhouse gases.
