Toyota followed with the Prius a year later, but it took GM until 2006 to introduce its first true gasoline-electric hybrid here. That car was the 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line, and I managed to find one in a Denver-area car graveyard recently. Geo and Oldsmobile were already gone, with Pontiac and Saturn following in 2010.

Over the past three years, GM and Honda have been collaborating on next-generation fuel cell and hydrogen storage systems, aiming at commercialization in the 2020 time frame. Next-generation fuel cell stack co-developed by Honda and GM. GM and Honda rank No. 3, respectively, in total fuel cell patents filed in 2002 through 2015.

French cars and extreme-high-mile machinery are on my list, of course, plus Sawzall roadsters / pickups , art cars and oddball special editions. GM had a good run with various Geo-badged Suzukis, Isuzus and Toyotas , too. There are certain categories of discarded vehicles that I search for before all others during my junkyard travels.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. It isa fundamental change in direction for GM. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. GM is developing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Thats short-sighted.
