In 2001 I began driving an electric car, obtaining the last of the ZEV mandate-required EVs. The DOE grant to the Etec EV Project will put 260 Level III chargers in the ground in the next two years. I got enthused just as the automakers, CARB, the feds, and major environmental organizations ended their various flirtations with EVs.

The other winning projects in the renewable energy category are: High-efficiency hybrid solar cells based on carbon nanotube enhanced nanostructures. Goal: Integrate single-walled carbon nanotubes into existing silicon and polymer photovoltaic devices to create high-efficiency hybrid solar cells.

But I will admit that one thing has changed even more than the size of our electric bill and that’s the size of the solar PV system we now need to generate 100% of our electricity – because the same moves that cut our electric bill also cut the number of solar panels we need by 50% too.
