Oil sands mines produce waste material called tailings; the waste materials have been difficult to reclaim and have grown larger than projected. Over the past decade, production from oil sands more than doubled from 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2000 to 1.35 mbd by 2030, according to the report.
