The third generation of Toyota’s supermini, the Yaris, is now available to order ahead of first deliveries this September. The Japanese carmaker has decided to keep the Yaris’ engine line up unchanged – so motorists have a choice of 1.0-litre litre and 1.33-litre litre petrol units and a 1.4-litre litre D-4D turbo diesel.

In Europe, the likes of the Yaris and the iQ have kept average fuel consumption levels low, while Toyota is working on several new concepts such as the FT-EV (see article ) which has a claimed range of 50miles per charge. However, Nissan has since embraced the need to drive down emissions and placed its focus firmly on electric cars.
