Toyota has stepped up its research, development and production capacity of both NiMH and Li-ion batteries and will use these technologies where appropriate in its expanding focus on electrification of the automobile. That vehicle will make its North American debut at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

The Li-ion pack is 31% lighter, with a 6% reduction in size; the NiMH pack is 2% lighter, with a 10% reduction in size. Following its unveiling in Las Vegas last month, the all-new Prius will go on display from October 28 at the Tokyo Motor Show, and is slated to go on sale in Japan in December.
