The coveted Chevy Volt battery contract appears to be going to a unit of South Korea’s biggest battery maker. a Detroit-based subsidiary of LG Chem, to be supplier of the advanced lithium-ion batteries for the Volt (right) , which is scheduled to begin production in late 2010.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. One wonders if the recent headway at MIT in building lithium ion cells using ?virus? South Korea did that and Australia is going to be doing that.
