The partnership combines GE’s global scale, broad technology portfolio, smart grid expertise, and its new WattStation Level 2 electric vehicle charger ( earlier post ) with Better Place’s EV services and infrastructure solution. Better Place is already working towards initial network deployments in these markets, beginning in 2011.

Better Place introduced its electric vehicle (EV) services platform at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in conjunction with Renault’s unveiling of the Fluence ZE Concept with Quickdrop (switchable) battery system and an expanded agreement with Renault, committing both companies to a volume of at least 100,000 electric cars in Israel and Denmark by 2016.

The aim of Better Place is as straightforward as it is admirable – it wants to help the industry overcome the obstacles of extended range, price and impact on the grid. The company has already made in-roads into Israel, Denmark, Japan, Australia and North America.

If a driver doesn't have access to a compressor station, they will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car's built-in compressor to refill the tank in about 4 hours. Nègre has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa. It just doesn't have an electric motor.

More broadly, Pike envisions PEV sales in California—the leading market for such in the US—expanding into smaller urban and suburban regions with more dealers beginning to offer the vehicles. The lack of funding opportunities will force some companies to exit the market or be acquired on less than generous terms.
