Many crossovers were able to qualify as SUVs, allowing them to qualify for the EV tax credit at a higher price than their electric sedan cousins. While these classification semantics are great news from a pricing perspective, they can make it difficult to determine how a vehicle will perform in a remote off-road situation.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. Not really sure where all the money is going, but it seems like the Volt is already over-priced and under performing.
