A fleet of 500 taxis navigated by computers, often with no safety drivers in them for backup, buzz around. The company that operates them, tech giant Baidu, said last month that it would add another 1,000 of the so-called robot taxis in Wuhan. Baidu also has a joint venture with Zhejiang Geely, called Jiyue, to make robot taxis.

Electricity is ubiquitous, EVs refuelable by wind, hydro, geothermal, solar, or traditional energy sources. It is a fact not obvious to non-electric vehicle (EV) owners that every electrical outlet (110v, 220v, or DC fast 480v) is a potential refueling spot for EVs. Access both in and out should be easy, including for medium-duty EVs.

The initial funding has come from serious investors, including Idealab, the business incubator of entrepreneur Bill Gross, as well as google.org, the green-investments arm of Google. Ride quality is about halfway between what youd expect from a decent small car and the bounce and jounce youd expect when taxiing a small plane on a dirt runway.
