Further expanding e-component production in the German state of Saxony, the new system manufactures modules for the fully electric BMW i4, made in Munich. Plant Leipzig’s first such production line went on stream in May 2021 and supplies the battery modules for the BMW iX.

The BMW Group has signed a long-term supply contract worth €2 billion for battery cells with the Swedish company Northvolt. The BMW Group has also localized battery production in Thailand, where it is working with the Dräxlmaier Group. More than half of the 25 models will be fully electric.

The two companies have signed a 5-year (2020 - 2024) supply contract for the lithium needed as a key raw material for battery cells. We aim to have 25 electrified models in our line-up by 2023 and more than half will be fully electric. Supply contracts will ensure the company’s security of supply up to 2025 and beyond.
