Volvo Cars formally inaugurated a new battery assembly line at its Belgian manufacturing plant in Ghent, where it will start building its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge P8, later this year. The plan was to sell only fully electric cars while phasing out “any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.” The new plans call for 90 to 100% of global sales to be electrified, including EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). It looks like those plans are now changing.

It’s been nearly a decade since Volvo first started rolling out plug-in hybrids in the U.S., One of them is that Volvo’s made the batteries larger every few years, leading to more plug-in electric range, improved hybrid drivability, and overall a better mix of attributes. That’s Volvo’s highest-mileage plug-in hybrid.
