At that point, the internal combustion engine kicks in and recharges the battery while you are driving. While you are working, the battery is also recharging. Imagine using your laptop computer on a battery. It runs down.

A PHEV can provide power to an entire home in the case of an outage; A fleet of PHEVs could power critical systems during emergencies. You dont have to plug it in.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10. Plans "large demonstration fleet" late 2009.

The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. Wired Home Subscribe Sections Cars 2.0 But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. Thats short-sighted.
