To encourage consumer purchases of electric vehicles, federal grants and other funds have been awarded to install more than 15,000 home charge stations. The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended range capability, designed to drive up to 350 miles without stopping to recharge or refuel.

An empty Volt pack will take 10 hours to fully recharge; an empty LEAF about 20 hours. Recharge time will usually be much less than what it takes to go from empty to full. Something Ecotality couldn’t do even with $100 million in federal grant money. All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord.
