GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. It is powered by a battery pack that when fully charged has a range of up to 40 miles; it also has a small gas engine that turns a generator that charges the battery once it is depleted. New vehicle technology comes with an alphabet soup of new abbreviations.

Another strikingly different concept evidenced by the PHEV is that it is essentially a large, portable battery that can store energy gathered during one part of the day, and then use it later to power not only itself but also the vehicle owner’s home. Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
