CRU forecasts global battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) sales will increase to 42 million vehicles worldwide by 2030. Plug-in hybrid and full battery electric vehicles use 25-27% more aluminum than the typical internal combustion engine car today, according to CRU.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. Of course, EVs that arent designed for battery swaps wont use it, and plug-in hybrids wont need it.
