Yes, the Ramcharger is basically an extended-range electric. The towing capacity is 14,000 pounds, with a payload of up to 2,625 pounds.

And in the last two weeks, one of the largest utility companies in the United States, Pacific Gas & Electric, announced plans to work with General Motors in experiments with their bidirectional charging technologies. In case of power outage at home, the DC pins in the charger can send juice back into the house, keeping the lights on.

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel.

The whole operation could take less than five minutes, pretty much the same amount of time many people spend filling their gas tanks at stations today. Most charge points available today take much longer to re-energize batteries than it does to fill a gas-powered cars tank. The main benefit associated with the swapping model is speed.
