The 2012 hybrid system produces a combined 200 hp (149 kW)—a 7% gain over the older model—and varies power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both, as needed. In the new transaxle, which has less electrical and mechanical losses than its predecessor, peak MG1 speed remains high at 13,000 RPM.

kWh Li-ion pack enabling an electric range of up to 15 miles (24 km) at speeds of up to 62 mph (100 km/h), according to Toyota. Toyota’s goal was to reduce the cost, weight and volume of the pack from the NiMH system used earlier. Maximum electric range is 15 miles. L/100km equivalent and 4.8 L/100km, respectively.
