The automotive catalytic converter, developed in the early 1970s primarily by General Motors and BASF/Engelhard and first deployed in 1975, changes exhaust pollutants into CO 2 , water vapor and nitrogen. Today, a typical original equipment automotive catalytic converter in a gasoline engine contains about $100 in precious metal.
