When GM installed chargers for the EV1 they used a 50amp 220V circuit that could pump over 6KW into the batteries. A visit to the gas station takes minutes not seconds and so the California Air Resource board, when it established fast charging standards, set the goal of charging the batteries to 80% in 10 minutes.
