Italian motorsport electronics specialist Magneti Marelli and UK high-speed flywheel specialist Flybrid Systems are collaborating to develop a new energy storage solution for Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS). The energy is stored into the Flywheel Capacitor by speeding up the flywheel.

Among the new features in the R18 are a more radical aerodynamics concept, including a new safety cell; a Li-ion battery replacing the flywheel energy storage system; and a revised V6 TDI diesel engine.

UK high-speed flywheel specialist Flybrid Systems is teaming up with Italian motorsport electronics specialist Magneti Marelli to work on a new energy storage solution for Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS). The first Capacitor to be developed will have a specification of 60kW power and a total storage capacity of 600kJ.
