GE Transportation expands locomotive diesel engine remanufacturing facility; demand increasing in part from compliance requirements for EPA Tier 3 standards

This increase will be driven by routine locomotive overhaul cycles and the need to comply with stringent EPA Tier 3 emissions standards for diesel engines by 2013. In March 2008, EPA finalized a three-part program that will reduce emissions from diesel locomotives of all types: line-haul, switch, and passenger rail.

GE unveils prototype for first Tier 4 heavy-haul locomotive

GE Transportation unveiled the prototype for its next Evolution Series Locomotive that will decrease constituent emissions by more than 70%. Effective in 2015, Tier 4 standards will require manufacturers of locomotive diesel engines to lower particulate emissions 70% and NO x 76%, compared to engines first introduced in 2005.
