The year of 2011 promises to be one of the most exciting in the history of motoring as electric vehicle services provider Better Place and car manufacturer Renault plan to begin production of tens of thousands of electric vehicles. It is expected however, that as production expands the cost of the battery will decrease.

In the electric Mini that transportsecretary Geoff Hoon drove last week, the batteries and associatedelectronics take up all the space normally occupied by the back seats. It ispleasingly quick but will still only manage 150 miles between charges, muchless than a tank of petrol, even if it costs only £1.50 to charge overnight.

The Peugeot name actually has a long history in the production of electric vehicles, having sold more ‘zero emission’ vehicles than any other manufacturer in the world. Its first electric vehicle was the Peugeot 106 Electric, which was sold between 1995 and 2003. PSA Peugeot Citroen – one to watch.

Whatever the method we eventually use to charge our vehicles, it is a welcome break from the smelly dirty world of disease-causing liquid fuel.
