In a paper in the journal Fuel , researchers at Tianjin University report on the use of cooled EGR to improve the overall performance of 2-methylfuran (MF) as an alternative fuel. However, an appropriate level of cool EGR improved the combustion and emissions, particularly through knock suppression and reduced NO x emissions.

Researchers at Tianjin University in China report that combing split injection to the Miller cycle with boost pressure can effectively decrease the knock tendency and increase the engine torque in a downsized spark-ignition engine. However, the cycle results in higher HC and CO emissions due to the low in-cylinder temperature.
